I think that all advances involving the propulsion and magnitude of explosives had the most significant impact in World War 2. Obviously the biggest example being the creation of three atomic bombs. The impact they had was massive, that much is known. However, rockets like the V1 and V2 started the grounds for ICBMs and eventually advanced to the rockets we have today. Although the rockets today are much more powerful and devastating, the V series was ground breaking at the time and fuelled designs for years to come. The ability for Germany to bomb London from mainland Europe was a great benefit, and had a major impact. There is no doubt that without these advancements, countries would have had a very different war. It would have been much more personal, much like World War 1.
In my opinion, when the Americans joined the Allies was the most significant turning point. Throughout their inter-war period they expanded to be the biggest army in the world. As soon as they had a reason to fight, there was no stopping them. Japan truly did wake a sleeping giant, and it didn't rest again until it had won. They had the benefit of an undisturbed (mostly) homeland, fresh soldiers, and an impressive army. With the help of the rest of the allies, they had to win. Pearl Harbor was largely a mistake on the Japanese side, ending in the decimation of millions of Japanese people. If Japan had targeted such a close to home location, the US would not have been provoked to end Japan.
When Winston Churchill said this, he meant that if a country or power expects to win a war, he cannot expect to do so by constantly evacuating. Eventually it comes down to making a stand and gaining some ground. Germany dominated much of the war by taking land. They expanded in almost every direction, taking land, thus they won much of the war. Churchill was well known for his ability to rally the English people. By saying this, he gave them confidence that he would win, but he wouldn't do so by evacuating. He would make moves.
Saving Private Ryan is about a platoon of soldiers looking for Private Ryan. 2 of his brothers had been killed already and he needed to be taken out of the war. The platoon eventually finds him, but when they try to remove him, he protests. He wished to stay with his own platoon. This means that the platoon that came to save him must stay too. They are in charge of defending an area from the Germans. They don't have many weapons and are running out of ammo, but they stick around because it is their duty. Eventually the Germans come and then both American platoons do the best they can to take out the Germans. Ryan is saved, but the infamous captain of the search platoon dies.
I enjoyed this movie, i thought it gave us a good look at what the war was like, both in battle and n the time between battles. |
