Middle East Conflict
To what extent is the creation of Israel, in his words, "a ghetto in a small corner of a vast Muslim sea"
On the 14th of May, 1948, the State of Israel was established; and thus began a timeless dispute. Since its creation, Israel has struggled to grasp a solid foothold in the Middle East. This is due to many factors. Firstly, 18 out of 22 of the Arab League derived from the United Nations do not recognize Israel as a state. Not to mention that ever since the Arab-Israeli conflict, it’s been difficult for either side to relax. However, Israel has not failed to impact the Middle East in a way more significant than many of the other recognized, and so called superlative Middle Eastern countries. Israel truly is a ghetto in a small corner of a vast Muslim sea, it fails to get a grip on the support of its neighbouring countries, however it is still able to make an impact on the Middle East as we know it today.
To begin, the fact that Israel doesn’t even have the recognition of its neighbouring countries further solidifies its predicament and subsequent relation to a “ghetto in a small corner of a vast Muslim sea”. Following the Khartoum Resolution of 1967, many Middle Eastern countries chose to not recognize Israel. They held 3 no’s against Israel, which consisted of: “…no peace with Israel, no recognition of Israel, no negotiations with it…" This statement sums up the relationship of Israel and the rest of the Middle East. The rest of the countries persist to deny Israel any rights, thus annexing them. The Muslim influence dampens any chances that Israel has to gain recognition. Because of this, Israel remains a ghetto. They are denied everything, and are left to exist in perpetuated conflict, never taken seriously.
Furthermore, the Arab-Israeli conflict that began in 1948 maintains Israel’s state of a ghetto. This ongoing conflict constantly weakens the connections that Israel has with the other Middle Eastern countries. This is exactly the opposite of what Israel hopes for. Instead of working on connections and strengthening relations, Israel continues to lose out on opportunities regarding the aforementioned effort. President of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu said “The truth is that if Israel were to put down its arms there would be no more Israel. If the Arabs were to put down their arms there would be no more war.” This quote signifies the fact that it is up to the Arab contingency to end the war. Although it is obviously a biased quote, it bears significance. It refers to Israel as a country that gets essentially beaten into submission, and is constantly forced into conflict in order to protect itself. It furthers the notion of Israel being a ghetto as it’s persecution is extended.
On the other hand, as insignificant as a “ghetto in a vast Muslim sea” sounds, Israel has not failed to make a large impact on the Middle East and the world. Although it is constantly entrapped in conflict, Israel has undoubtedly made an impression on the world. This goes against its reference as a “ghetto”. Being labelled as a ghetto suggests that it is incapable of note-worthy actions or making significant impacts. This obviously isn’t true, as the world has seen, since its inception.
Israel has not found it easy to exist as a respected country in the Middle East. It has been bullied, exiled, and treated poorly since it was created. Isaac Asimov was right in what he said. Israel is trying for recognition in an area that just won’t give it to them. They are trying to dissuade millions engrained in the Muslim culture. The odds are stacked against them, and they are formed of a small contingency of opposing thinkers to the majority, fighting an uphill battle, much like a ghetto.
